I was recently requested to make some Oreo cookies for a birthday party. Little did I know that these cookies were going to spark such creativity and briefly take over my life! Man, do people love some cookies! Considering I had never made such cookies before, I made sure to inform my customer of this; she reached out in advance, so I had more than enough time to test a recipe and ensure she received a delicious product! Time to get to work!
When I develop a recipe, I like to base it on a recipe that's already in my arsenal. I took my original chocolate chip cookie recipe and simply swapped out the chocolate chips for Oreo pieces. The very first batch was okay, but I knew they could be better! I got started on another batch, but this time, I added more Oreo pieces into the mix itself! As I was shaping the dough to be chilled, which is an important step in cookie making, I got the grand idea to stuff the dough balls with even more Oreo pieces! After each cookie was filled, they were wrapped and placed in the fridge to chill. Chilling your cookie dough helps the flavor develop and lets the butter solidify, ensuring the cookies don't spread as much as they bake. I like to shape my dough before chilling because I have had issues getting my dough out of the bowl due to it being refrigerated. Rolling the dough after the chill, I found myself having to chill the cookies again. Being as impatient as I am, which isn't the best quality for a baker, I found it better for me to shape the dough once it's made, then chill it.
As my dough was chilling, I decided to scroll through social media and stumbled upon a video of a cookier who bakes her cookies at 375 instead of 350 degrees Fahrenheit. I found this very interesting, made a note to myself, and decided to test this out when it was time to bake cookies the next day. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the video and cannot give full credit to the baker I saw. For that, I am sorry! However, to all the bakers who make content like the baker I saw, thank you! I don't believe in gatekeeping baking secrets, tips, and tricks, so it is very uplifting to see other bakers who share their concepts as well!
The next day rolls around, so time to bake! I love bake days! I started out with a single tester cookie at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. It was baked for about 12 minutes, looking like your typical, ordinary cookie. It spread a little, was a little flat, but had golden edges and a chewy center. It was a bit too crunchy for my taste, but overall, not a bad cookie! Now, I moved the oven temperature to 375 degrees to test the second cookie. Another tip for baking cookies: make sure your oven is good and hot. Think about a true bakery; their ovens are on all day long, and they produce beautiful, identical cookies. After my oven reached the temperature, I let it sit to make sure it was stable after jumping 25 degrees. This cookie was baked for about 8-10 minutes, and the difference in looks alone was unreal! This cookie had a beautiful height to it, was deliciously golden around the edges, soft and chewy, yet baked in the center, and just looked phenomenal! This is the type of cookie you would see sitting in a bakery display. After letting the cookies cool, I tried them side by side, and the 375 cookie even tasted better! Needless to say, I am forever baking my cookies at 375 degrees!
After baking the rest of the cookies and letting them cool, I did a small cookie giveaway to get opinions on my new cookie. Everyone who tried them had nothing but positive things to say! I even got a couple more orders for them and some new reviews on my Facebook page! I am so blessed to have the supporters I do. Now, back to the original cookie order! All I had left to do was make an Oreo buttercream to top the cookies! I personally like the cookies better without the frosting, but they sure looked picture perfect with it! To make the buttercream, I made it like normal, except after my butter was whipped, I added the cream from the middle of the Oreos straight into the mix, then incorporated that before adding powdered sugar and cookie crumbs/pieces. I can't lie, the frosting was absolutely delectable! It was like eating a smooth Oreo cookie! It was delicious, but again, for me, I thought it was a bit too sweet altogether. The cookies were amazing on their own.
In the past, I have had issues piping cookie frosting. It seems like no matter how small I crush up the cookies, they still get stuck at the end of the piping tip. And guess what, it happened to me again. I wanted a pretty swirl of icing atop these cookies, but it didn't happen. I ended up using a much wider tip, which wasn't the design I wanted, but they still looked nice! After frosting them all, I added half an Oreo to the top of the cookie and a sprinkle of cookie crumbs, and bam! The prettiest cookies you have ever seen! Then came my next issue...
I started boxing the cookies since I had to deliver them within the hour, and the cookie boxes I always use were too small! These thick, stuffed, frosted cookies were too tall for the box, and it wouldn't close! After a second of freaking out, these cookies ended up in a big ole cake box! It was a little ridiculous to have just a dozen cookies in a cake box, but they sure looked nice through the window of the box! I explained to my customer and apologized for the boxes, but she didn't mind and was very excited to dig into these cookies! After this initial cookie order, I got three more orders for these cookies! I was so grateful to be so busy! Receiving orders is a joy I am unable to explain. I love baking for people, and the feeling will never cease!
